Workshops on conservation of the western capercaillie Tetrao urogallus at Hala Krupowa Lodge
The Mountain Lodge in the Natura 2000 site "Pasmo Policy" was the site of a two-day (03-04 April) meeting of foresters from the Carpathian forest districts inhabited by the western capercaillie. The meeting was co-organised by the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Krakow and the LIFE project "Mission Nature" implemented by the Foundation for Support of Ecological Initiatives and sponsored by the Regional Directorate of State Forests in Krakow. On the first day participants could deepen their knowledge about the biology of this rare species, as well as methods of monitoring and proposed principles of forest management. Particularly interesting was the subject of genetics of Polish populations. On the second day, the participants visited the slopes of Polica mountain in order to try and trace the presence of these rare birds. Workshops were an excellent opportunity to discuss the problems with the western capercaillie’s conservation and to exchange experience.
